Moving Back To The US From Germany

Bye Bye to Germany

Getting ready to head to the airport!

Snow in GermanyOf course, it would snow the day we left…

Our ride came at about 7:30 in the morning to take us to the airport.  It was snowing a little bit too.  We got to the airport and finally found where to check in.  They wanted to charge us for some of our bags.  They were all supposed to be free since we were military traveling on orders but I guess the first guy we talked to didn’t quite know how to read the orders to see all 4 of our names.  He wouldn’t even accept my military ID because the SSN was XXX out.  I wonder if that will be an issue other places?  We talked to someone else and she talked to someone else and finally got it cleared up.

The first flight was fine, then we had to board in Amsterdam for the long flight.  They had crazy security!  We stood in a machine, put our hands in the air and it scanned us.  The flight was so empty it was nice!  Some advice…when flying to and from Europe with children, fly in March, not December.  A lot fewer people that way!

The long flight was 10 hours and it wasn’t too horrible.  We all watched movies and the boys slept a little bit.  I got to watch The Blind Side, Four Christmases and Up in the Air.  I did try to watch District 9 but I just couldn’t stand it. We got off in Memphis and had 1 more flight to Nashville.  This was such a pain.  I wish we would have just rented a car from there and drove to the hotel.  We had to go through customs and collect all of our luggage and re-check it and then go through security yet again.  In the process, we lost our car seat.  I am so glad we don’t have to do this overseas flight again…or at least for a very long time.  (Who knows where the Army might send us in the future)  It is such a long day and such a pain.  I am so glad it is over. We got into Nashville at about 7:30pm although really it was 2:30 in the morning our time.  We got the GPS on the rental which was a very good idea.  We made it to the hotel on post and finally everyone was asleep by about 11pm.  But then the boys woke up at 4am.

This PCS has been stressful.  We still have a lot more to do before we are settled but at least we are out of Germany and have the long day of flying behind us!
