Why You Should Listen To Podcasts

Podcasts are my favorite thing these days! I am so addicted! There are so many different types of podcasts out there too. I even wrote a post about my favorites

I first found podcasts way back in 2009 but I had to download each episode to my ipod. It wasn’t easy but I found a few photography ones and learned a lot about photography while I took my little boys on walks around Germany.

I didn’t do too much more with them until last summer when I started listening to a few of them I found out about online. Then I found the Serial podcast and everything changed. I listened to all of those episodes and needed more. I found podcasts on books, movies, by my favorite bloggers, tv shows and more.

These days I listen to them during the day. I can listen when getting ready in the morning, when cleaning my house, when having to do a chore I don’t like such as mowing the lawn, when I am working on the computer or even right before bed.

If you haven’t started with podcasts you need to, they are great and this is why…

You can listen without having to stare at a screen

One of the great things about podcasts is you can basically get the same information you do from a blog post or You Tube video but you don’t have to sit in front of a screen to watch it. You can just listen while doing other things. It’s a great way to learn more while saving time. Some podcasts I even speed up so that I can get through more of them in a shorter amount of time.

You can hear people talk about your favorite tv shows

Have you ever finished a tv show, want to talk about it and realize you can’t really do that? Podcasts change that. Networks like Afterbuzz allow you to follow podcasts about your favorite shows, hear others talk about the episode and even listen to guest stars they might bring on the show to talk with them about it. Usually they are people who have a small role on the show but you get some inside information about what it was like to film it or even where the show might be going. There is also a trend of people picking an older TV that is on Netflix and doing an episode by episode show looking back on their experiences watching it the first time and how they feel now.

You can learn more about what you want

There are podcasts on blogging, religion, sports, games, etc. They are a great way to help yourself learn more about whatever topic might interest you. I can learn how to be a better blogger while doing my dishes or figure out how to start a garden while mowing my lawn. It is the perfect way to learn more without having to find the extra time to do it.

They make chores easier

It is so much easier for me to get motivated to clean when I can listen to a podcast while doing it. I just put my headphones in and go. I also did this while I was painting last spring and it was great.

Perfect for a commute

If you have to drive for a while or even take a bus or train to work, podcasts might be a good idea for you to pass the time. They can replace listening to cds or the radio. You can preload your favorite shows ahead of time and have something great to listen to.

How do you listen to podcasts?

There are a few ways you can get podcasts. You need a phone but I recently purchased a Gophone for $20 and I am able to listen to my podcasts on that using the Podcast Addict. You can also use the Podcast app on your iphone. It is easy to search for a new podcast or find one you have heard of online. You can have it set up to only listen when you are on WI-FI or download them to your phone to listen to wherever you are. It is also easy to delete episodes you might not be interested in.

Listening to podcasts is so flexible, easy to use and a great thing to do.

Do you listen to podcasts? Which ones are your favorites?

  1. I’m not really a podcast person. I have used podcasts for language learning, which I posted about here if you’re interested (http://embracingadventure.com/2012/05/24/getting-language-lesson-podcasts-from-languagepod101/) and mostly listened to them while cleaning, but I have found that when I’m driving or walking I do better with music. I have been taking a lot of bus rides lately and listening to music, so maybe I should switch back to podcasts for part of the ride. đŸ˜€
