This morning I was reading a post over at Caffeinated Catholic Mamaof how people have lost all sense of personal-space and privacy, either because of our over sharing techno culture or maybe just a general lack of manners. She gives her wonderful list of Top annoying and prying questions from absolute strangers, Here.

While writing in her comments I was thinking that for me, being such a Counter-Culture Mama, the lists of random rude questions and offending comments from those that it just does not concern, could go on and on…ad infinitum. So, I thought for fun, I would make a small project out of several lists of obscenely annoying Questions and Comments that I have gotten from strangers, all neatly compiled into categories. 🙂
What follows is a list of my TOP 25 way too personal, yet oh so popular questions and all to common comments, that I have received during my husband’s Deployments.
      1. Oh, is your Husband Deployed ?
      2. Do you Miss Him ?
      3. Is it Hard ?
      4. Will they send Him home for the Birth ?
      5. Is it your Husband’s Baby or Jody’s ?
      6. Does your Husband know you’re pregnant ?
      7. Do you know who the Father is ?
      8. What will you do / How will you have a Baby by yourself ?
      9. Why do you have / keep having kids if he is gonna be gone so much ?
      10. Your children are so young, If he gets killed, they won’t remember him.
      11. Why do you have kids when, He could get killed anytime ?
      12. Your so Lucky you live off the government, the rest of us have to work.
      13. If you didn’t live off the government you wouldn’t be able to afford all those kids.
      14. Maybe your husband will die and you’ll get all that money.
      15. You should take out some more insurance on your husband, because he has a good chance of being killed.
      16. But, just think of all that extra money at Tax time.
      17. I don’t know how you could do that, I could never let my Husband do that.
      18. (My Sister-in-laws fave way of relating to me)…I know just how you feel, my Husband was out of Town, on the road, for two weeks last month !
      19. How can you be Faithful for 15 months ?

    21.  You don’t think your Husband will wait a whole year do you ?

    22.  Don’t you all just sleep around with each others Husbands anyway ?

    23.  So, has your Husband Killed anybody yet ?

    24.  You could have gotten out / why would he stay in / It’s his fault he is Deploying / So he’s getting out after this right ?

THANK YOU! I love this list and will probably link it in my next blog.

My husband thankfully doesn't deploy but only has underways, but I do completely get the deployments because of my ex who was a Marine. I hate these questions and I really hate when people think I'm sleeping around because he's gone 6 months out of every year.

My least favorite was when my husband and I got engaged and the people I love so much *my dance studio family* said "Oh no…don't marry him…he's a great man, but you won't be able to deal with the military life and being alone so much." It not only hurt but it was annoying! More because it was coming from people that knew me my whole life yet obviously knew nothing about me. So the "How do you do it?" is probably one of my top in the annoying questions and comments.

Thank you for sharing! I love seeing that I can truly relate to other people, even if they aren't in the same branch as my husband! *hugs*

Yes, people can say the craziest things. When my husband deployed in 2009, there were rumors going around about the deployment getting extended or that they'd come home and have to go back out for another deployment. Of course, I was upset. I called one of my "friends". She said, "Well, isn't that his job? Isn't that what he does?" Wow, I was shocked that someone could be so insensitive. I ended up having to stop talking with her, because she had no clue. She'd constantly complain about if her husband was coming home for work late by 20 minutes. Now, I admit when my husband's deployed, I'm probably a bit more sensitive. If she had talked about her husband traveling for a week or coming home late and my husband was home, I would have had more patience.

I agree with Stevie above, the worst one is, "How do you do it?" You just do!

I dont know how many times hubby was asked before he deployed, “Wi you take your family with you?” His response to such an idiotic question was, “I asked if my wife could have the top bunk but they said no.” Those asking the question were well educated, highly successful businessmen and local and church leaders. They have no clue what’s going on in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thanks for this post! Questions like those REALLY get on my nerves, too. Recently (before leaving for his second deployment) my husband got asked, “So, like, how many kills did you get?” the first deployment. It was asked by a well-meaning friend, and he took it in stride, but I just WISH that people wouldn’t ask things like that. Questions I get asked such as “Are you sure you want to put up with that?” in relation to PTSD are even worse. Would you say that to someone whose soldier was visibly wounded? Of course not. But it’s just that people don’t understand the invisible wounds of war.

    About Soldier’s Wife, Crazy Life

Welcome to Soldier’s Wife, Crazy Life! I am so glad you are here.

My name is Julie and I first became a military spouse in 2005 when my husband of 3 years re-joined the Army. Then, in 2014, he joined the National Guard. In January of 2024, he retired from the National Guard after 21 years of service.

During our time in the military, we got to spend 4 years in Germany as well as Tennessee where we now call home.

We have three boys and have been through four deployments together.

I hope that you can find support for your own deployments, PCS moves, or anything else military life brings you through my articles and social media posts.
