The Pressure to Have a Perfect Christmas

December 17, 2014 by Julie 7 Comments

The Pressure to Have a Perfect Christmas

The Pressure to Have a Perfect Christmas

The perfect amount of Christmas gifts, the perfect Elf on the Shelf spots, the perfect Christmas meal, perfect amount of advent activities, Pinterest worthy decorations, etc, etc, etc. It goes on an on and makes you think you are lacking in some way.

Why does it seem like there is so much pressure to have a perfect Christmas? We can blame social media but I think it is probably something that has been going on forever. Social media just makes it worse. We want to get Christmas right. We want everything to work well. We don’t want our children to be ungrateful and we want them to understand the true meaning of the day. We want them to experience the magic and make good memories. We don’t want to mess things up.

For some reason we have convinced ourselves that there is only one way to accomplish all that. That we should be doing what our neighbor is or we could be ruining Christmas for our family. Hogwash!

We all come into our marriages with a holiday background. A certain way of doing things. It could be very different from our spouse’s way of doing things. I remember our first married Christmas. My family all took turns with the presents. When my Grandpa was alive he would take his time on purpose just to be funny. So it was a total shock to me to be sitting with my in-laws and see the free for all present opening session. I was lost in a sea of a different way of doing Christmas.download (15)

Over the years we have developed our own way of celebrating the holiday. In a lot of ways it does look like the way it did when I grew up. Part of this is because my husband is usually gone when it is time to prepare for Christmas and has even missed Christmas with us a few years. I have just done what I have enjoyed and wanted to do with my own kids.

When I think about traditions and what we will do, I am not worried about them being perfect. I don’t care if my decorations are not Pinterest worthy or that my kids get more than three gifts. I don’t feel like I have to pick between Santa or Jesus. We do both just like my mom did. I try not to rush and plan too much but I also know that is because of my personality. Other people thrive on that.

I want Christmas to be special and full of good memories for my kids but I believe there are so many different ways to do this.

So if you are stressing about achieving the perfect Christmas, stop. Take a step back and think about what is important to you and your family. Continue old traditions and start new ones. Have fun with it and remember that Christmas is a wonderful time and no one should make you feel like you just aren’t doing it right.

What are your favorite Christmas traditions? Do you feel the pressure to have a perfect Christmas?

Soldier’s Christmas

December 24, 2011 by Julie 1 Comment

Christmas Tree

Soldier’s Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone
In a one bedroom house made of plaster & stone.
I had come down the chimney with presents to give
And to see just who in this home did live.

I looked all about a strange sight I did see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand,
On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind
A sober thought came through my mind.

For this house was different, so dark and dreary,
I knew I had found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly.

I heard stories about them, I had to see more
So I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.

And there he lay sleeping silent alone,
Curled up on the floor in his one bedroom home.

His face so gentle, his room in such disorder,
Not how I pictured a United States soldier.

Was this the hero of whom I’d just read?
Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean shaven, his weathered face tan,
I soon understood this was more then a man.

For I realized the families that I saw that night
Owed their lives to these men who were willing to fight.

Soon ‘round the world, the children would play,
And grownups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.

They all enjoyed freedom each month of the day,
Because of soldiers like this one lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone
On a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.

Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.

The solder awakened and I heard a rough voice,
“Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice;

I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more,
My life is my God, my country, my Corps.”

With that he rolled over and drifted off into sleep,
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still,
I noticed he shivered from the cold night’s chill.

So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
And I covered this Soldier from his toes to his head.

And I put on his T-shirt of gray and black,
With an eagle and an Army patch embroidered on back.

And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,
And for a shining moment, I was United States Army deep inside.

I didn’t want to leave him on that cold dark night,
This guardian of honor so willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over, whispered with a voice so clean and pure,
“Carry on Santa, it’s Christmas day, all is secure.”

One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night!

German Christmas Markets

December 16, 2011 by Julie 3 Comments

If you are ever stationed in Germany you will get the chance to visit at least one German Christmas market.  Most of the towns have them even if they are small.  While we were over in Germany we got to visit quite a few of them.  We never were able to make it to the big one in Nuremberg.

Have you ever been to a German Christmas Market?

Christmas when they are deployed

December 11, 2011 by Julie 3 Comments

Christmas when they are deployed Soldier's Wife, Crazy Life

Have you ever had a Christmas without your spouse? If you have ever gone through a Christmas when they are deployed it can be very difficult and lonely.

We have done it twice.  Once in 2005 (although not a deployment, he was in Germany and I was in the US waiting to join him) and once in 2008.  In 2006 we got lucky since I had a baby and they sent him home on R&R over Christmas.

Here are some ideas to help make the holiday season a little less lonely during a Christmas when they are deployed:

1) Plan to visit family or have them come visit you.  If you can’t be with your husband on Christmas morning, family might just be the next best thing. they can step in, keep you busy and allow you to have fun with others even if you are really missing your spouse.

2) If you can’t be with family or don’t want to be, make plans with friends.  This is what we did in 2008.  My parents were coming in January so it was just the boys and I for Christmas.  We had our time opening gifts at home and then we got together with my friend and her kids.  It made for a fun day.  Lots of playtime for the kids and lots of emotional support for us moms.

3) Make a fun gift package to send to your husband.  Check the dates to make sure he will get it in time.  If for some reason you can’t send him something, make him something and save it for him.  Even if he is going to get home in the Spring or Summer, he will still enjoy it. There are a lot of great ideas you can do for a cake package for Christmas when they are deployed.

Christmas picture4) Video tape the festivities.  He may not be able to be there in person but at least he can see how the day went.  Have the kids create a special video message for him too. Video tale opening the gifts. Being able to watch this can make your spouse feel closer to home during a Christmas when they are deployed.

5) Think about it. Think about the military life and how some years you will be apart for certain holidays but the next year you might not be.  Think about the holidays you have spent together.

6) Create new traditions.  Maybe you will save the stocking for later when he is home.  Who cares if it is February?  Have your Christmas a month early if he is leaving right before December.  Don’t worry about celebrating on the actual day.  As military family our lives are not normal, why do our holidays have to be?

7) Remember you are not alone.  I know it is easy to think that you are the only one without your husband during Christmas but it just isn’t true.  There are a lot of other spouses in your shoes.  Some in the military, some are apart for other reasons.  You aren’t the only one, even if it feels like it.

Twas the day after Christmas…

Photobucket

Twas the day after Christmas and all through the house…

Well not quite a poet so I will stop there 😉  I hope you all had a great Christmas 🙂

PhotobucketOurs was pretty low key.  The boys slept in until 8 am!  I couldn’t believe it.  We did gifts and then they played the rest of the day.  Dinosaurs, Mickey Mouse and Toy Story were the favorites of the day 🙂

Photobucket

I didn’t take too many pictures which is not like me but I think I could be getting sick and just wasn’t feeling it.  I ended up taking a 2 hour nap with the baby in the afternoon.

Photobucket

I made some London Broil, mashed potatoes & green beans.  It wasn’t too hard to make and was yummy!  We normally always make turkey on Christmas and it was nice to not have to be cooking all day this year.

Starbucks Socks…FUN!

Did you have a good day yesterday?

And remember the Yoga Mat Giveaway ends tomorrow night 🙂
