Looking for a new restaurant to try in the Fort Campbell area?

Going out to eat can be a lot of fun, especially with the world opening back up after 2020. Trying out new restaurants can be a great way to learn more about your new home. Here in the Fort Campbell area, we have many restaurants to try. Some are closer to post than others.

There are many different types of places to go and visit and explore here on the Kentucky and Tennessee border. From Bar and Grills to bakeries with treats you can’t get enough of. The Fort Campbell area is also growing and seems to be adding new places to try all the time.

Here are a few restaurants in the area that our family has been to and have enjoyed:

Blackhorse Pub and Brewery

Blackhorse is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, they had a fire early this year and are temporality closed. Blackhorse has a big pub feel and is especially cozy during those cold winter days, or nights. I love their prime rib sandwich and hope they will be back open before the end of the year. They are located at 132 Franklin Street in Downtown Clarksville.

Kimo’s Hawaiian Bar and Grill

Unfortunately, Kimo’s has since closed.

Kimo’s serves Hawaiian food and yummy cocktails and is located at 125 Franklin Street in Downtown Clarksville. The kalua pork is amazing and they have plenty of tropical cocktails to try.

El Bracero

El Bracero is a fun place to get together with friends for some quesadillas and margaritas. There are three located in Clarksville, and one in Hopkinsville. They also have a military discount.

Silke’s Old World Breads

Were you stationed in Germany and miss getting those yummy German bakery treats? Well, the Fort Campbell area has a place you can go to get them. Silke’s is a bakery and cafe you are going to want to check out. Order a plate of schnitzel and bratwurst, with a side of German cake for dessert. They are located at 1214 A College St. in Clarksville.

Johnny’s Big Burger

Looking for a local place to get a yummy hamburger and fries? You can find just that at Johnny’s Big Burger, across from the Austin Peay Campus. Make sure to bring cash, and don’t forget to order a shake. You can find them at 428 College Street in Clarksville.

The Depot Bar and Grill

The Depot is a little further away from Fort Campbell, but worth the drive. The food is so delicious, I love the chicken salad sandwich, and the atmosphere is great! We like to stop there on the way to Nashville. Find them at 1007 S Main St. in Springfield, TN.

Golly G’s

Golly G’s is such a fun place to take the kids for ice cream or other baked goods. They also have. a lunch menu. In Clarksville, they are located in the Sango area at 2622 Madison St. You can also find locations in Pleasant View and Greenbrier.

Chi-Town Hotdogs

Unfortunately, Chi-Town Hotdogs has permanently closed!

In the mood for a really yummy hotdog? Check out Chi-Town Hotdogs. So many yummy choices. They do only accept cash and are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Find them behind the Big Lots at 1057 S. Riverside Dr. in Clarksville.

Liberty Park Grill

Want to take in a meal by the river? Check out Liberty Park Grill right at the Clarksville Marina. They make some yummy salads and will give you a free meal on your birthday. After dinner, take a walk along the river and watch the sunset. Perfect for date night!

Woody’s Hand Tossed Pizza

I love going to Woody’s with my family because we rarely have to wait, can get pizza for everyone, and they have some yummy salads too. They have three locations in the area, on Tiny Town Rd, Woodlawn, and Sango areas.

Finding local places to love at a new duty station is so important to do. Doing so will help you feel more connected to the area, and make for a better experience.

Within the Fort Campbell area you can find many of your favorite chain restaurants, but going out and trying a more local place to eat can be a lot of fun, and help you find favorite places you will want to return to over and over again.

10 Things To Know About Being Stationed At Fort Campbell

Almost eleven years ago, our family flew into Nashville and started the Fort Campbell chapter of our lives. While my husband got out of active duty in 2014, he joined the National Guard, and we stayed put here in Clarksville, TN. I have now lived here longer than anywhere else besides where I grew up.

If you just found out you are going to be stationed at Fort Campbell, congratulations! While I can’t guarantee what type of experience you will have here, you can have an excellent one. Not everyone likes Ft. Campbell, some people hate Ft. Campbell, but others love the place and plan to stay here long term.

So if you plan to move here soon, here are just a few things to know about being stationed at Fort Campbell:

1. Fort Campbell is on the border of Tennessee and Kentucky, literally

Fort Campbell is literally on the border of Tennessee and Kentucky. Being from California, which is such a huge state, going out of state still seems so funny to me, and yet, here, I do it all the time. If you have a baby at Fort Campbell, their birth certificate says, “Fort Campbell, Tennessee” even though that doesn’t exist. Officially, Fort Campbell is considered in Kentucky, but some of the military post is actually on the Tennesse side of the line.

2. Don’t listen to people who say there is nothing to do; there is plenty to do

Often I hear that there is nothing to do here. Not true. There is plenty to do. I think what they mean is that there are not a lot of big-city things to do which is true, but I will talk about that in #3.

They also might not have kids. I could see feeling that way if you didn’t have kids, maybe. But between the post and the local communities, there is always something going on. And they keep adding more and more things to do. Of course, during COVID, many things are limited.

3. Don’t expect big city life, you will need to head to Nashville for that

Growing up in Southern California, this place seems a lot less exciting. So for people who are used to that, it can feel like this is a small town. I think I have gotten used to that, but I know it can be frustrating for others. Luckily, Nashville is just about 45 minutes to an hour away, and they have a lot going on.

There are a lot of chains here, from Target to Starbucks to Dollar General, which they seem to have everywhere. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing local to enjoy, there is. There are restaurants and stores that you can’t find anywhere else. I am a big fan of Miss Lucille’s Marketplace which is an indoor antique mall with a small cafe.

4. Housing is a toss-up

I have never lived on post at Fort Campbell, but I have visited friends that have over the years. I think housing is overall a toss-up. Some places seem pretty nice, are close to Starbucks and parks. Other neighborhoods seem more lacking. It just depends.

5. Traffic sucks

If you try to go to the mall at 2 pm on a Saturday, good luck. That is probably the worst time of day for traffic around here. And when traffic is bad, it is very very bad.

Traffic gets even worse when it snows. Yikes! And this is not a very walkable area either. You also might live five minutes from post, and it can take you 30 minutes to get home because everyone is trying to do the same thing.

6. The weather is crazy

We have hot and “don’t want to go outside” humidity in the summer, we have rain and tornado season in the fall and especially in the spring, and winter is all over the place. We had a snow week in January, but also 65-degree weather just a few weeks later. A couple of days ago things felt like spring around here, and I found snow on my car this morning. Fun times.

As far as the snow goes, if you are from California, Hawaii, or Florida, it snows a lot. If you are from New England, Minnesota, or Alaska, you might wonder why everyone is freaking out. The whole city might shut down with just an inch, make sure to stock up on your bread and milk.

7. You can buy a house for under $300K

Coming from California, housing here is really cheap. You could easily find a home for under $300k, and if you have $400K to spend, you are looking at an amazing house. One of the main reasons we stay.

8. Everything you need on post is pretty close

The nice thing about Fort Campbell is that everything the military family needs is pretty close. From the PX to the Commissary to most of the housing. It’s all right there. Which makes getting from place to place much easier. 

Off post is a completely different story. Clarksville is pretty spread out which I am still not used to even after all this time. I wish things were a little bit closer together.

9. You can live in Kentucky or Tennesee, your pick

If you decide to live off post at Fort Campbell, you can choose whether you want to live in Kentucky or Tennessee. Most people do pick Clarksville to live in, but some enjoy living in Oak Grove or Hopkinsville in Kentucky. There are plenty of options for off post living here.

10. They need more bookstores

This whole area needs more bookstores. That is my personal rant. We do have a Books-a-Million which actually has a great selection and a lot of amazing deals. There is also a nice used bookstore downtown, but adding another one, plus another library would be great.

If you do get orders to Fort Campbell, do some research on housing, look into things to do and know you can have a pretty amazing experience here if you want.

A Walk Through the Clarksville Greenway Near Fort Campbell

I love to walk. Back when my boys were little and we lived in Germany, I had a double stroller and I walked all over the place. I could walk almost anywhere I wanted to go.

Not only did this allow me to lose any baby weight I had gainned, I enjoyed it so much. I would listen to music, or very early podcasts and just head out and go.

When we moved to Clarksville, it was a bit harder to walk everywhere. This city is not set up like Germany was. But I still try to walk everyday, even just around my neighborhood.

Here in Clarksville, near Fort Campbell, we have the Clarksville Greenway. Miles where you can walk, and a lot of it under the trees so in the summer it isn’t as hot. They keep expanding it and building onto it which I love.

A few weekends ago, my husband and I walked 2.5 miles and back of one part of the Greenway. This really challenged me and hope to do it again in the near future.

What is Fort Campbell Really like?

In March, we will have lived here in the Fort Campbell area for TEN years!

I can’t even wrap my mind around that. Since I left my parent’s home for college in 1997, I have never lived anywhere that long.

When I tell people I have been here for almost ten years, they look a little shocked and wonder if it is because my husband has been stationed here for all these years…

He was, from 2010-2014 he was stationed at Fort Campbell but ever since he has been in the National Guard, and we stayed in the area. We did this for a few reasons.

One of the biggest is that we can’t go back to where we are from. California is way too expensive, and it just doesn’t seem like that option is ever going to work out. Another reason is that we are just not sure where we want to settle for the long term.

We have so many thoughts about that, and we are just not sure. The third is that we have three boys in schools here, one with special needs, and we overall like how things are going. We don’t want to mess with that.

So how long will we stay in the Fort Campbell area? We are not sure. We have to see what the future brings!

There are active duty families that have been here for a long time. This seems to be the place that can happen sometimes. On the other hand, I have known a lot of people who have just come through here for two or three years, so you never know.

So, being here so long, you might want to ask me, what is the Fort Campbell area like? Is this place a good place to get stationed? Should we put it on our list that the Army may or may not go by?

Well…one thing to know about the Fort Campbell area is that different people have different opinions about the place. If Fort Campbell comes up in a Facebook group, I will read the replies and agree with some of them and wonder how the person came to that opinion with the others.

It seems like Fort Campbell is a different place for different people, so that is something to keep in mind when you look into moving here.

Where you can live

We live in Clarksville, a lot of people who live off post here live in Clarksville, on the Tennessee side. However, some people live in Oak Grove, Kentucky or further away from post, Hopkinsville, Kentucky or even up to Madisonville, Kentucky.

Where you decide to live can make a big difference in what you think of the area. There are active duty military families that live up by Exit 11 that can get to Nashville in about 30 minutes and others that live 30 minutes from Fort Campbell in the other direction, in a much more rural area.

The great thing about that is that you do have options and choices based on what you want to do. Want to live on post? You can. Want to live in a regular old neighborhood 10 minutes from post? You can. Want to buy property in a very country like area? You can. Fort Campbell is pretty flexible that way.

Where you can shop

Fort Campbell does have quite a few options for shopping. We have a Target in Clarksville, and many other stores you are familiar with. But we are also missing other stores such as Macy’s, Costco, and Trader Joes. The good news is, you can find a lot of what you are missing in Nashville. The bag news is, you have to actually go to Nashville and that isn’t going to be a quick trip.

Where you can eat

Clarksville does have its share of local restaurants. They try, they really do and we have a few favorites. However, the Fort Campbell area isn’t going to be the best place to find all the different types of foods you might be used to if you come from a bigger area. You might be missing something.

We have too many fast food places, and they seem to keep adding them. When a new building goes up, we hope for a new sandwich shop or cafe and get an Arby’s or a Taco Bell. That can be a bit frustrating.

Community life

One of the reasons Fort Campbell can be a good place for you is that overall they are pretty family-friendly. This is, however, an area where people disagree. Some people think Fort Campbell and Clarksville are family-friendly and others don’t.

The schools are a big hot button issue. We have always had a good experience in the off-post schools. Others feel very differently about that. The best thing to do is to check out what people are saying about the school but also keep an open mind. Talk to people who have had good and bad experiences to get the bigger picture.

Clarksville has a lot of community events you can take part in. From Easter Egg hunts to Halloween fun. There seems like there is always something going on. They are also trying to work on their downtown area and in the last few years, they have really added to it with new restaurants and the Downtown Commons which turns into an ice skating rink in the wintertime.

Traffic

If there is one thing I hate about this area it is the traffic. Being that I learned to drive in Southern California you would think it wouldn’t be that big of a deal but for some reason, the traffic around here gets under my skin. But I try to avoid the worst areas during the worst times.

A lot of the issue, at least in Clarksville, is that there are just too many people trying to go to the same place at the same time. Clarksville is spread out but there are only so many places to go on a Friday night.

Weather

You might be wondering about what Fort Campbell is like when it comes to the weather. The weather is really all over the place. In the fall, the weather can be nice but doesn’t stick around for very long. We can get a lot of rain, straight-line winds, and tornado weather.

Winter can bring snow, however, we usually don’t get very much. Usually no more than an inch or two at a time. However, we do have a lot of snow days. We have had years where we have had over 10 snow days and years were we haven’t even had one. Last year we might have had one, so I am guessing this year we could end up with a snow week, we will see.

If you live on post, the schools there do not close as often as they do in Clarksville. The post itself has closed for terrible weather but that doesn’t happen very often. It gets cold here if your idea of cold is anything under 30 degrees, which it is for me. If you are used to negative degree winters and snowstorms, you will think the winter is quite mild.

Spring brings a lot more rain and more of a chance of tornado weather and straight-line winds. One year, we lost power for 37 hours. Yikes! You do learn to adapt to this but it can still make me quite nervous.

Summer can be pretty humid starting in June and by August you will just be over it. However, you probably will have to wait until mid-September, or even October to really cool down. This year was the worst. We were still in the 90s when October started.

As I think back to my time in the Fort Campbell area, it has overall been a good experience. I am not sure I would have handpicked this area out of the entire United States, but the Fort Campbell area works for us for now.

Although we are a National Guard family now, we have a lot of the perks of the military. We can shop at the Commissary and a lot of the people I meet are connected to the military in some way. We don’t have to go far for the military community, which is nice.

The Pros and Cons of Living on Post at Fort Campbell

Did you just find out you are going to be stationed at Fort Campbell? If so, the decision to live on post at Fort Campbell can be a difficult one to make. We went back and forth on living there ourselves when my husband was still active duty. In the end, we decided to buy a house in Clarksville and have been there ever since.

I have had many friends who have lived on post at Fort Campbell and have loved it, I have had other friends who moved off because they didn’t. I decided to ask my Facebook group what they thought about living on post at Fort Campbell to come up with this list of pros and cons.

Pros of living on post at Fort Campbell

  • Schools– Schools on post can be good and are easy to take your children too. While there are a lot of good schools off post in the area, there are some not so good ones too. Most housing areas at Fort Campbell have a school close by and easy to get to.
  • Community– If you are looking for community, you will definitely find that on post at Fort Campbell. There is always something going on and activities and events to get involved in. From kids sports to MOPS to playdates for your kids.
  • Starbucks– Fort Campbell is home to two Starbucks that just happen to be at parks with a splash pad. This is fantastic for the summer. Bring your kids to play and relax with your favorite drink. While you are welcome to these places even if you live off post, living on gives you better access and might just be a short walk from your doorstep.
  • Save on electricity– Living on post at Fort Campbell should save you money on electricity. Living off post can cost you $200-300 a month. While this isn’t always the case, it is something people complain about on local pages and something you can avoid by living on post.
  • Everything is close– The nice thing about Fort Campbell is that all you need is relatively close together. Most of the neighborhoods are not too far from the hospital, the Commissary, the PX, the Chapels, and being on post means you are close to your spouse’s workplace. You can get to any of those places without having to wait in line to get on post or through the traffic of Clarksville and Oak Grove which can be terrible at times.
  • Playgrounds– If you have small children, on post at Fort Campbell can be the ideal place to live. There are playgrounds everywhere. No matter where you have your home on post, you should be able to walk to at least one, if not two playgrounds or more. There are also two splash parks that are open during the summer.
  • Pre-K– Getting into free Pre-K off post can be a challenge. Doing it on post is a lot easier if that is important to you.
  • Fenced yards– There are a lot of fenced yards on post. Off, it really just depends. If you have a dog or children, a fenced yard is probably going to be important to you.

Cons of living on post at Fort Campbell

  • Break-ins/Vandalism– Sadly, break-ins and vandalism happen on post just like they happen off. Some spouses do not want to live on post for this reason. They feel that they are more likely to have something stolen if they live there. Just being on post doesn’t mean you are completely safe from these things.
  • There are nice and safe housing options off post-In the Fort Campbell area, you have a lot of options for where to live. There are plenty of off post options to find a nice home in a safe neighborhood. A lot of these neighborhoods are closer to restaurants, stories and places you will probably want to go quite often. If you are worried about not being able to find a home in the area, spend some time looking to see what is in your price range.
  • Farther commute for spouses that work in Clarksville and Nashville– For military spouses that work in Clarksville or Nashville, living off post might be a better option. There are quite a few off post neighborhoods that are closer to the Interstate making it much easier for the spouse to get to work.
  • Can’t leave work behind– A lot of military families like to live off post so they can leave work behind when they are not at work. Clarksville makes this easy to do since things are more spaced out. You can live 15-20 minutes from post or even further and have a more off post experience. Living on post you will be right in the middle of everything, and some people do not want that.
  • Pocket BAH off post– Some families can pocket BAH by living off post. If you receive $1000 a month for BAH and your rent is only $650, that is some extra money in your pocket every month. This doesn’t work for everyone as families who are looking for a bigger home will have to pay more, and that could end up being over the BAH amount.
  • Housing can be difficult to deal with– Quite a few spouses mentioned that dealing with on-post housing was a big headache. That the people they talked with were rude and they had trouble getting things done. While you can still encounter this with a rental agency, dealing with housing can be a big con for some people.

As you can see, there is a lot to think about when you are trying to decide to live on post at Fort Campbell. What works for one family might not work for another. There are definitely pros and cons to either choice.

If you are trying to decide what you want to do, take some time to check out the local area. If you can’t visit ahead of time, try to find photos and listings online. You can always start on post and move off or the other way around if things change.

We have been in the Fort Campbell area for almost eight years now. While we have been here so long because my husband is in the National Guard now, others tend to stick around for a while too. Over the years I have been able to see how this area has grown and every year they seem to add something new.

This winter there have been quite a few things we have done in the area or want to do. So whether you are already here or planning to PCS to Fort Campbell soon, here are some super fun things you can do at Fort Campbell this holiday season.

Go ice skating in downtown Clarksville

There is a brand new ice skating rink in Downtown Clarksville. For $10 a person, you can rent some skates and be on the ice for an hour and 15 minutes. They play Christmas music, and you can kinda believe you are in your own Christmas movie. Here is the holiday schedule and more information.

See the lighted path at Christmas on the Cumberland

If you and your family like lights, Christmas on the Cumberland is a treat. You will be able to walk along the riverfront and check out the displays with one million lights. The display will be up until January 3rd. Here is more information about Christmas on the Cumberland.

See the lights at the Speedway

At the Speedway, you can drive the mile course and see one million lights from the comfort of your car. Cost is $25 per carload, and the lights will be up through New Year’s Day. Here is more information about this display.

Visit ICE in Nashville

Just about an hour away you can visit Nashville and see what they have to offer for the holidays. One popular event is ICE featuring a Charlie Brown Christmas at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center. You can save 20% on tickets by using promo code HERO when booking online for ICE as well as for Cirque Dreams Holidaze and the Diamond Rio Holiday & Hits Dinner Show. ICE is a walkthrough holiday attraction kept at 9 degrees with two million pounds of colorful ice sculptures and four two-story tall ice slides.

Super Fun Things You Can Do At Fort Campbell This Holiday SeasonVisit Santa at the PX

Santa will be at the PX mall until December 23rd. You can get your picture taken, and I have found that overall the wait is less than if you go to the mall in Clarksville. You can also head to Nashville and go to Bass Pro Shops to get a free photo with Santa although there always seems to be a long wait for that one.

Honeysuckle Hill Farm

Are you at Fort Campbell too? If so, you are in for a treat. Have you heard of Honeysuckle Hill Farm? This is a fantastic pumpkin patch near Fort Campbell, located off of exit 24, about 30 minutes away.

In 1995, Farmer Jeff purchased 12 acres in Robertson County as a place to raise his kids and do some farming. He grew up in Memphis and was a city boy who had always dreamed of farming. In 2003, he had his first fall festival for church friends and neighbors. After that, Honeysuckle Hill Farm was born.

Today, Honeysuckle Hill Farm covers 200 acres and is managed by his son, daughter and about 150 farm hands.

The fall season at Honeysuckle Hill Farm started on September 23rd and will be ongoing until November 4th.

They are open:

Tues-Thurs from 9 am to 2 pm
Friday: 9 am to 10 pm
Saturday 10 am to 10 pm
Sunday 12 pm to 6 pm

Hometown Heroes Day

On September 30th of this year, the Farm will be celebrating Hometown Heroes Day. Those who serve will receive free admission and their direct families will get 50% off the cost of the ticket price. This will be for firemen, police, and active duty and retired military. There will also be a firework show that night starting at 7 pm.

Fall Festival 

Enjoy the fall festival and what Honeysuckle Hill Farm has to offer. My family and I were able to spend last Sunday afternoon exploring the farm. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed a lot of what the farm has to offer. Here are the highlights:

Pumpkin Train

This is a fun train ride you take out to the pumpkin patch part of the farm. They let you off and you can choose your very own pumpkin. This is so much fun for the kids and the train is super cute.

Corn Maze

This year the corn maze is the Nashville’s Country Music Corn Maze Sponsored By CMT & Mix 92.9. We spent a lot of time in there and it was a lot of fun trying to find our way out. I am not sure I would want to be in the maze after dark.

Playgrounds

Honeysuckle Hill Farm has quite a few playgrounds and areas for kids to run around. They have stagecoaches to play on as well as a giant tractor, a horse, and even some slides. They can also jump around on the corn popper trampolines, my 6-year-old loves them.

The pig races are hilarious because well, they are pigs. The kids can watch and root for their team and watch the pigs make it around the track.

There are other things going on at the farm too, from tasting some of KK’s Sweet Shop fudge to zip lining. You can buy lunch or just snacks at some of their many food stands.

Our family had a blast and plan to go back again in the future! Your kids will love this farm too!

A Visit to Christian Way Farms

This year we went to two pumpkin patches. I went with my son with his class to Honeysuckle Hill Farm and then we went to Christian Way Farm during fall break. I really liked both of these places, probably better than Riverview Mounds where we have been in the past.

Here are some photos from Christian Way Farm! I really liked how the farm was laid out and my kids seemed to have a ton of fun there. Christian Way Farm is about an hour from Clarksville though so a bit of a drive.
