John Shaw’s Guide to Digital Nature Photography Book Review

I was given the chance to review, John Shaw’s Guide to Digital Nature Photography. It is such a pretty book all about one of my favorite topics, taking pictures.

From Amazon… “Photography legend John Shaw returns with his much-anticipated guide to digital nature photography, complete with more than 250 extraordinarily beautiful photographs.

For over four decades, John Shaw’s authentic voice and trusted advice has helped photographers achieve impressive shots in the great outdoors. In his first-ever book on digital photography, Shaw provides in-depth advice on everything from equipment and lenses to thorough coverage of digital topics including how to use the histogram. In addition, he offers inspirational and frank insight that goes far beyond the nuts and bolts of photography, explaining that successful photos come from having a vision, practicing, and then acquiring the equipment needed to accomplish the intention. Easily digestible and useful for every type of photographer, and complete with more than 250 jaw-dropping images, John Shaw’s Guide to Digital Nature Photography is the one book you’ll need to beautifully capture the world around you.”

What I really liked about this photography book was all the photos that were included and all the good information he had. I have found that when you are explaining photography you must have a photo to show the reader what you are talking about. It makes it a lot easier to understand. You can also learn a lot about photography based on reading the information about the phone, which he has included.

I am also so glad he included Chapter Six: The Photographer at Work because it shows the reader what he personally uses and what life is really like working in the field. The other chapters are 1) Gear 2) Getting Started 3) Lenses 4) Composition 5) Close-Ups.

Whether you just bought your very first DSLR or you have had one for a while, you can get a lot out of this book. So check it out, it should help you along your photography journey.

Searching For Sunday By Rachel Held Evans Book Review

April 14, 2015 by Julie 7 Comments

Rachel held evans

I am a big fan of Rachel Held Evans. I read her first book Evolving in Monkeytown and then I was a part of the launch team for her second book, A Year of Biblical Womanhood. When I saw an opportunity to be on her team for her third book, Searching for Sunday, I was excited to sign up!

When it comes to faith and religion, to what I believe and what I understand, I enjoy reading about how other people come to their own faith. I especially find this helpful when someone was raised similar to me. Rachel Held Evans is one of these people. She was raised in an Evangelical home and attended Evangelical churches. I did too. A lot of her church past is very similar to mine.

searching for sunday

As I try to figure out what parts of my faith are important, how to live out my faith and what I need to let go of, I look to people who have been there and have been through it.

Searching for Sunday is a book about church. She centers it around seven sacraments. Baptism, Confession, Holy Orders, Communion, Confirmation, Anointing of the sick and Marriage. The book takes you through all of them with stories about each topic. Some are personal, some are more general. A lot of the chapters will cause you to step back and think a bit about what you have experienced in your own church life.

searching for sunday

The point of the book is to find hope. To get back to believing in church if you don’t anymore. To see that your faith walk is a journey and you will have ups as well as downs.

This book reminded me of the things I have always loved about the church and allowed me to get excited about it again. It let me mourn and deal with some of the icky parts I have experienced. It was just a good way to connect with another Christian and take part in her journey.

It’s about how God’s Grace is always enough, about an unraveling faith and finding your way back again, about how you don’t have to choose between your Christian faith and science or between doctrine and compassion. That doubting is okay and searching for answers is a part of the journey.

Beyond that, it was just nice to read more about Rachel’s story. About leaving her church, trying to start a new one and where she ended up. About what she went through, what she learned and where she is now. It was a great breakdown of what her church experiences have been like the last few years.

The book is out TODAY! You can buy it at your favorite online bookstore or, enter to WIN a copy for yourself here.

The giveaway will run until next Monday! Enter the Rafflecopter below…

Blue Stars by Emily Gray Tedrowe Book Review

February 18, 2015 by Julie Leave a Comment

Blue StarsIt is always exciting for me to get a book review request about a fictional book having to do with Military families. I always enjoy reading them because they each offer a different perspective on war and living life as a Military spouse. I had the opportunity to review Blue Stars by Emily Gray Tedrowe and just finished the book last week.

BLUE STARS brings to life the realities of the modern day home front: how to get through the daily challenges of motherhood and holding down a job while bearing the stress and uncertainty of war, when everything can change in an instant. It tells the story of Ellen, a Midwestern literature professor, who is drawn into the war when her legal ward Michael enlists as a Marine; and of Lacey, a proud Army wife who struggles to pay the bills and keep things going for her son while her husband is deployed. When Michael and Eddie are injured in Iraq, Ellen and Lacey’s lives become intertwined in Walter Reed Army Hospital, where each woman must live while caring for her wounded soldier. They form an alliance, and an unlikely friendship, while helping each other survive the dislocated world of the army hospital. In the end, both women are changed, not only by the war and its fallout, but by each other.

What I liked best about this book is the two different women we get to learn about. Neither one is your typical Military spouse, if there is such a thing. One is the adoptive mother and the other is the wife who married her Army husband later in life. They both experience so many emotions during the book and it is so hard to know how I would have handled the situations they went through. Knowing that my husband could have been in their loved one’s shoes was humbling as well.

Ellen is not someone who ever saw herself in the role she was put in. That makes for an interesting point of view. I liked how the author explained how she was feeling and how she was dealing with it all.

Lacey’s story is very different from Ellen’s but the two come together because of Walter Reed. It is an unlikely friendship but one that I know happens time and time again just because two people are going through the same sort of difficulties. I have seen it happen in my own life.

I have heard stories about Walter Reed but not like this.  I never knew what the day-to-day looked like and it seems like this book does a good job of letting the reader know what it can be like to sit by your loved one who is there because they were injured overseas.

EMILY GRAY TEDROWE is the author of Commuters: A Novel, which was named a Best New Paperback by Entertainment Weekly. Her short fiction has been published in the Chicago Tribune’s Printers Row Journal, Fifty-Two Stories, and Other Voices. Her new novel, Blue Stars, was conceived during her brother’s Marine service in the Iraq war. Originally from New York City, Emily now lives in Chicago with her husband and daughters. The Berenstain Bears and the Biggest Brag by Mike Berenstain Book Review

January 19, 2015 by Julie 2 Comments

Berenstain Bear books

When I was a little girl, bears were my favorite animal. I loved them. So of course I LOVED the Berenstain Bears. I think my favorite one was the one about the junk food. My mom liked the messy room one.

Over the years I have tried to pick up a few for my own boys.

I was given the opportunity to review, The Berenstain Bears and the Biggest Brag.

It is written by Mike Berenstain. He grew up watching his parents, Stan and Jan, working together to write and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too.

It was published by Zondervan!

This book is good for children of all ages. You can read it to them or they can read it to you.

The book is about how brother and sister bear keep trying to one up each other. I think a lot of kids like to brag. They are trying to figure out their place in this world and when they discover they are good at something, they want to share it. Between siblings it can be such a battle. That is what this book is about. Brother and sister bear are trying to one up each other and Grizzly Gramps comes and explains why they shouldn’t be doing so.

In the back of the book you can find activities and questions you can ask your own little cubs. This is great because it gives you some good ideas on how to make this real for your kids and to get them to think about it. I like how each of the Berenstain Bear books have a lesson we can teach our children. Whether it is something they are struggling with or just something that is important to learn.

The illustrations are fantastic and really show the detail of the bear’s world as well as what they are experiencing.

Navy Seal Noel Book Review by Liz Johnson

December 16, 2014 by Julie Leave a Comment

Navy Seal Noel

A few years ago I was able to read the book A Promise to Protect by Liz Johnson. I enjoyed that book and was excited to hear about her latest, Navy Seal Noel.

A LETHAL REUNION

Abducted by a drug cartel, scientist Jessalynn McCoy’s orders are simple—release a deadly toxin, or be killed. Trapped with no options, she’s desperate for help…she just never expected it from Will Gumble. The boy who let her down years ago is now a navy SEAL. She trusts his skills, his experience. Yet trusting him is a struggle. Will’s Christmas wish is to heal their damaged relationship and get them to safety. But time is running out and the danger is rising. Any mistake could mean the difference between spending the holidays together or apart forever.

Excerpt:

“Jess, calm down. I won’t hurt you.” The words made no sense to her muddled brain, but they continued, quiet and assured. “Don’t scream. It’s all right. I won’t let anything happen to you.”

It wasn’t the words that made her sink into him, but the voice that, even after all this time, she’d recognize anywhere. Her eyes hadn’t been playing tricks on her that afternoon. Will Gumble was in this compound. In her very room.

“I thought I saw you—I thought that was you, but…” Her words were little more than a whisper despite his assurance that it was safe to speak. Her stomach pitched, fear and relief mingling with alarm and the echo of a remembered betrayal. But dealing with her emotions would have to wait until she felt steadier on her feet. Exhaustion and the ebbing of her fight-or-flight adrenaline rush had left her legs like jelly. She leaned into Will. He held out his arms, as though he knew just what she needed. As though he was still someone who cared about taking care of her, being there for her.

But she didn’t want him holding her. She wanted answers. She wanted to understand what on earth was happening. Most of all, she wanted to silence the little voice in her head that kept saying Will’s appearance was simply a dream or hallucination.

Yanking herself upright at the last possible moment, she shoved his chest with both hands. “You scared me to death! Why did you break into my room? What are you doing here?”

His lopsided grin had always started with a little quirk to the left before spreading across his mouth. And that hadn’t changed, even as he looked down at the tiny black-and-white-checkered floor tiles.

He scraped his fingers over the black whiskers covering his chin. “Your dad sent me.”

          “My dad?”

“Well, I couldn’t say no to my new XO, could I?”

“So you’re still in the navy?” Oh, she sounded bitter—so much more bitter than she wanted to. Why couldn’t her words be flippant and nonchalant, as if it didn’t really matter that she no longer knew even the most basic things about him? He’d popped back into her life, and she didn’t want it to matter.

          But it did.

Maybe because of the extreme situation.

Sure. She’d just keep telling herself that.

His smile flickered for a moment before he nodded slowly. “I am.”

Forcing a chuckle, she said, “I figured when my dad realized I was missing, he’d send a SEAL team to bring me home.”

“Not a full team—he just sent one.”

My thoughts: I am a big fan of books that are in a series. Sometimes that means that each book is about the same people and other times it means that the book includes the same people but changes who the main story is about. This is the case with the Men of Valor series in which Navy Seal Noel is book three. In previous books we got to hear the stories of Ashley and Matt and then Staci and Tristan. This one is about Jess and Will whom we have seen bits of before. I loved the fact that Jess was a scientist and that they came from San Diego. I wasn’t sure how this story was going to turn out. I knew somehow Will would save Jess but it was exciting waiting to find out how that was going to happen. If you like romantic suspense, you will like this book.

Coming Home By Greg Ruth Review and Giveaway

October 2, 2014 by Julie 3 Comments

Coming-Home-ecard1

I wanted to share a book review of the book Coming Home by Greg Ruth. I was sent a copy to review and I have really enjoyed it. It’s a simple, poignant book about a boy and his dog waiting at the airport for a military parent to come home. How many of us can relate to that?

There are not too many words in this book but that is okay. The pictures tell the story more than anything. The book made me tear up a little and it also made me laugh. Super cute. It reminded me of all the times my own kids had to wait for Daddy and what it felt like to get him back. I also love how the parent he was waiting for was not his Dad but his Mom. It was great to see because sometimes it is the Mom that is away, not the Dad.

The book will be for sale starting November 4, 2014.

Full Measures by Rebecca Yarros Book Review

May 23, 2014 by Julie Leave a Comment

FullMeasures_500I get excited when I hear about Military Spouses that write their own books. I am a big reader and I love lots of different types of fiction. I have been following Rebecca Yarros’ blog, The Only Girl Amoung Boys for a while now. When she asked if I wanted to read an advanced company of her new book, Full Measures, I was very excited to say yes.

Full Measures is considered an NA book which I have learned means “New Adult” which are books written about young 20-somethings that are trying to figure out how to be an adult. No longer a teen but not quite into full adulthood yet.

She knew. That’s why Mom hadn’t opened the door. She knew he was dead.

Twenty years as an army brat and Ember Howard knew, too. The soldiers at the door meant her dad was never coming home. What she didn’t know was how she would find the strength to singlehandedly care for her crumbling family when her mom falls apart.

Then Josh Walker enters her life. Hockey star, her new next-door neighbor, and not to mention the most delicious hands that insist on saving her over and over again. He has a way of erasing the pain with a single look, a single touch. As much as she wants to turn off her feelings and endure the heartache on her own, she can’t deny their intense attraction.

Until Josh’s secret shatters their world. And Ember must decide if he’s worth the risk that comes with loving a man who could strip her bare.

Now I will say that the book does deal with some sensitive topics. The story starts out with the death of Ember’s father who was killed in action. I know that can be hard for some in the Military community to read about it. It is also has some mature scenes in it.

I thought this was a great read! Even though it dealt with a sad situation, the book was about a girl trying to figure out how to get life back to where she could really live it. The relationship between Ember and Josh is an interesting one. There were tears, laughs and lots of not wanting to put the book down. I love it when that happens with a book.

I can’t wait to read Rebecca’s next one 🙂

You can purchase the book on Amazon for just $.99 for your Kindle. Go check it out 🙂

I love all the support that is out there for us Military spouses. I got the privilege of reviewing an E-book by fellow Blogger and Military Spouse, Kathryn Sneed. Kathryn has been blogging at Singing Through the Rain since 2011. Her blog is a supportive blog for Military spouses and one of my favorites!

Journey Through Deployment: Stepping Forward with Confidence During Military Separations is filled with:

  • Tips for preparing yourself and your family for deployment.
  • Hope and encouragement to get you through deployment.
  • A section for civilians to learn what military life is like.
  • Tips for preparing yourself and your family for reintegration.
  • Stories, lessons, and journeys of other military spouses just like you!

I read this book as we finished up our fourth deployment and I can tell you it is filled with a lot of great advice for anyone going through a deployment. When your spouse first leaves it can be overwhelming. You might not know how you should feel or if what you are feeling is okay. Having a book like this will help you understand that you are not alone. It can also teach you what to expect as the deployment goes on. I would have loved to have read something like this during our first deployment.

I also enjoyed the stories the author added and advice from other spouses. It really helps to hear from different people as different people do have different deployment experiences.

You can purchase Journey Through Deployment at Amazon or as a PDF file.
