Flying With Children When You Are By Yourself

August 19, 2013 by Julie 2 Comments

If your spouse is in the Military, you have probably had to travel somewhere by yourself. If you have had to do this with children, you know how challenging doing so can be. I have had to do it too many times. I am not a pro at flying with my children and I get through the challenge by preparing a little and praying a lot. Here are just a few tips that you might find helpful.

Flying With Children When You Are By Yourself

1) Don’t book a super early morning flight. If you can, make the flight later in the morning or later in the day. Waking up at 3am to get to the airport in time has never ever worked for me. What usually happens is that I don’t sleep the night before or only get an hour or two. It is just not good to start a day of travel that way. So if you can, don’t book early morning flights.

2) Media is your friend. When we were flying back from California the last time my son played with the Kindle Fire. I didn’t have to worry about him at all. Now for the younger kids, this might not work but I will never not fly with some type of media for my kids again. The only reason we survived trips overseas and back was because the kids were able to watch movies. You do have to remember that they are not allowed to use them on take off and when you land. It is a good idea to talk to your kids about that rule beforehand.Flying with children

3) Prizes. Before flying I tell my boys that they will get a prize once we are seated on the airplane and they have their seatbelts on. This really works for my son with Autism as he does really well when you plan ahead like that. I usually give them a small Lego or something I know they would love and that will keep them entertained. You can go to the dollar store or even a thrift store to find little toys they have never played with before. Give them out throughout the flight.

4) Don’t try to be supermom. I think there is this idea that if you are a good mom, your kids will be perfect angels when they fly. The reality is, kids are kids. You do what you can as a Mom to get everyone on that plane and to make it through the flight. I don’t mean ignore your kids if they are being loud or acting up, but give yourself a break. You are traveling alone with children. Your husband might be deployed and you might be at the end of your rope. People might stare and people might comment but don’t let it get to you. You know you are a good parent but you are being tested and it is okay if it doesn’t go the way it should. Some people are rude, some people have no idea what it is like to fly with kids and some people have forgotten what traveling with small kids is like.

5) Accept help when it comes. I am bad about this. I want to do it all myself. But there are nice people out there. Someone might ask if they can help you carry a car seat, let them. Someone might ask if you need help getting into your seats, let them. Be polite and ask the flight attendants if you need something. They should be understanding.

What tips would you have for traveling along with children?

Another Beautiful Day at Knott’s Berry Farm

September 28, 2012 by Julie 2 Comments

Growing up in Southern California I have such fond memories of going to Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland as a child.  That is why I love taking my boys.  Now growing up we usually went to Disneyland during the year and not at all during the summer.  We would have yearly passes and most of the summer was blocked for us anyways.  So as an adult I refuse to pay all that money to go to Disneyland in July.  So this summer, since we were in CA in July we decided to go to Knott’s Berry Farm.  It is a cheaper option and not as many people.  They also had a Military discount too.  I also wanted to mention that I just went to their site and read this…

Knott’s annual tribute to our Military, past and present, starts November 1st. FREE admission for Veterans or current serving military personnel and one guest with proper I.D. presented at turnstile. (DD214, Veterans Administration Hospital ID or Active Military Service ID.) Plus purchase up to six additional tickets for just $19 each! Ends November 21.

We were able to meet up with one of my best friends and two of her kids.  We spent the morning with them and then had lunch and stayed until about 7 that night.  The boys had such a great time, even little Joshua.  He was pretty done by the end of the day though.

Celebrating our anniversary in San Francisco, California

August 31, 2012 by Julie 5 Comments

When we were in California my Mother-in-law watched the boys for us for a night. We decided to spend the day in San Francisco and then a night in a hotel. We ended up spending about five hours in the city and then found our hotel in Alameda which was nice. It was across the street from a shopping center with restuants so it worked out perfectly for us and was much cheaper than staying in the city.

San Francisco

First we stopped to take pictures at the Golden Gate Bridge.  For some reason I have never done this before.  It was a treat!

San Francisco

We walked by Fisherman’s Wharf and spent some time at Pier 39!

Lots of people at Pier 39 🙂

Then we walked around the city a little bit.

We had a lot of fun just the two of us.  It was nice to have that little time together and celebrate our 10th anniversary a little early 🙂

Weekend in Santa Claus, Indiana

October 12, 2011 by Julie 1 Comment

This past weekend we drove up to Santa Claus, IN for a wedding.  We have some friends that live near there and also got to see a few friends from California that were visiting for the wedding.  It was such a great weekend.  We were able to spend a good amount of time with our friends and catch up a little bit.

We stayed at Santa’s Lodge which is right by Holiday World.  It was a cute little hotel.  It wasn’t as dressed up in Santa stuff as I thought it could have been but it worked well for us.  They had an indoor pool we got to use on Saturday morning with a hot tub.  The reception was also at the hotel so that made it really easy for us.  They also gave us a military discount of $10 off a night.

What places have you been for a quick weekend away?

Where To Travel To

March 29, 2011 by Julie 6 Comments

travelingAfter our cruise in December 2009 & our PCS back to the states we knew we had to take a break from doing so much traveling.  We are still in that break.  One because of not having the extra money to do it and two because we have a small baby, plus Ben is deployed.  I know there will be a time when we can travel again.  There are a bunch of places I would love to go…even if I don’t get to go for a long time.  I just love to see different places, take lots of pictures and I just love staying in a hotel.  I know a lot of people hate them but I love doing it.  I also fell in love with cruising excited to go on more cruises in the future.

This is my wish list of places to see…

1) Hawaii.  I was able to visit in 2000 but Ben has never been and I would love to go with him and my boys.  I think it would be a lot of fun.  But who knows, maybe we will get stationed there someday?

2) Scotland, England and Ireland.  I can’t wait to visit these places!  We didn’t get a chance to go while in Europe so it is one of the first places I want to go when we can afford to do so.  I think it would be such a fun trip to make when Ben retires.  You can Space-A over there too.

3) Australia. I am not sure how we will be able to get over there because it is SO expensive.  But it is on my list for sure.  I am in the middle of watching The Boys Are Back and it makes me want to go even more.  I would love to spend a whole month there!  And maybe see New Zealand too.

4) The Baltic. When we were on our cruise we kept running into people who had been on the Baltic cruise and said it was amazing!  So this one is on my list too.  Thinking it will be in the far far future though.

5) The USA.  All 50 states.  I think I have visited 27 so far.  But I really want to see all 50 eventually.  Not all at once…but eventually.

What is on your travel list?  Are you getting to visit anywhere fun sometime soon?

Right now I just hope we can get out to California for Christmas so nothing too big in my plans but that is ok.  There should be time for that later.

My Experience Flying Space-A

January 17, 2010 by Julie 3 Comments

my experience flying Space-A

This past summer Ben was deployed and I decided I wanted to spend the summer in sunny California!  I did not want to spend almost $3,000 to fly there from Germany.   My friend T also needed to get to the US so we talked about maybe trying out Space-A together.  We knew it was crazy but we were up for the adventure.  Space-A with children is very difficult but it can be done.

We made the decision about 5 months before we were going to leave.  During that time, we went to www.pepperd.com and looked over everything.  We had so many questions and did not understand the process at all.  I had another friend who had done it and she explained it to me and it started to make more sense.

space-A

First of all, there are different categories of travelers.  Active duty is Cat 3, Deployed Spouses are Cat 3b (if the soldier is deployed over 365 days) and Cat 4 (under 365 days but over 120 days) Cat 5 is for spouses flying without the sponsor when the sponsor is not deployed and Cat 6 is retirees.

If you travel with your sponsor, you will be a higher priority than a spouse without their sponsor will.  If your sponsor is deployed, you will be higher than a spouse whose husband/wife is not.

We ended up being Cat 3b because of when our husbands left and when they were supposed to return.

The first thing we did was get a signed letter from our husband’s command that allowed us to do Space-A.  We also knew that we wanted to fly out of Ramstein so we signed up with them.  We did this by sending them a simple email with the attached letter from the command.  Ramstein Information can be found here!

I did this on April 9th so that was my “sign up” date.  That meant that anyone in my category with a sign up date later than me was behind me in priority for getting on a flight.  This was any flight leaving from Ramstein.

I needed to get to California and my friend needed to get to Arkansas.  Our plan was to get to the US on the first flight we were able to.  I could have waited in Ramstein for a flight to CA but I did not want to wait there.  If I was going to wait, I wanted it to be in the US.  And we wanted to make that long flight together.

Now because we did not know what base we would end up at, we signed up to fly out of any base we thought we could end fly into.  Most of these were on the East coast.  I think we signed up for about 9 different bases.  If you sign up for a certain base and never show up there, oh well.  That is why we were able to sign up for so many.  What we wanted to do when signing up was put ourselves between days 45-50.  If you signed up April 9th and wanted to fly April 12th you would be on day 3 when you went to fly.  This is not very high up on the list.  You also do not want to be at day 59 when you try to fly out because the maximum amount of days you can be on a list is 60.  So if you try on day 59 and do not make it you will be back to day 1 the next day.

Space-A The thing about Space-A is that you need a plan, then a plan b, then a plan c.  You need to be able to change things and get creative about it.  You need to be flexible.

This is a great web page to read.  There is just so much good info there!  And Pepperd Message Board for Space-A travel is a must.  There is a ton of information about the flights there that you need to read.  Basically, you need to figure out where you should fly from and where you should fly to because not all bases are equal as far as where they go, how often they fly there and how many people they will take.

Too be continued…
