Christmas Cookie Baking

December 28, 2011 by Julie 2 Comments

Christmas Cookie BakingNow that Christmas is over, so is my Christmas baking. There is just something about the Christmas season that makes me want to bake a bunch of things. I tend to go a little crazy but it is worth it because we always have a lot of yummy treats.

Right before Christmas I made some peanut butter blossoms (which are my favorite) and then used this peanut butter chocolate chip recipe to make some yummy cookies. I got both of these recipes from Bake at 350 which I think is my new favorite baking blog!

Peanut Butter Blossoms

Then the day before Christmas we made Christmas cookies. I used two recipes. The first one Alyssa at Near Normalcy told me about from Cake Central. This one tasted good and it dried really fast. I didn’t make it quite thick enough though. The other recipe was also on Cake Central called Antonia74 Royal icing and it had a lot of great reviews. It turned out well but I really wish I had a KitchenAid mixer or something besides a hand mixer. Hoping that can happen sometime in 2012.

Royal Icing Cookies

I am still unsure about the icing dripping out like that. I am guessing I will figure it out with more practice.

Royal Icing Christmas Cookies

The boys helped me with this batch so we made some fun interesting cookies this time. It was a lot of fun watching them come up with different designs. I love my happy face.

Since one of my goals for 2012 is to lose about 30lbs, I really have to make sure I am not tempted to eat so many of the treats I want to make. I am going to start off working on one batch of cookies and making one cake a month. Most likely I will make it for some event or for someone else. I want to keep practicing without always having a ton of sweets in the house.

Soldier’s Christmas

December 24, 2011 by Julie 1 Comment

Christmas Tree

Soldier’s Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone
In a one bedroom house made of plaster & stone.
I had come down the chimney with presents to give
And to see just who in this home did live.

I looked all about a strange sight I did see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand,
On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind
A sober thought came through my mind.

For this house was different, so dark and dreary,
I knew I had found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly.

I heard stories about them, I had to see more
So I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.

And there he lay sleeping silent alone,
Curled up on the floor in his one bedroom home.

His face so gentle, his room in such disorder,
Not how I pictured a United States soldier.

Was this the hero of whom I’d just read?
Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean shaven, his weathered face tan,
I soon understood this was more then a man.

For I realized the families that I saw that night
Owed their lives to these men who were willing to fight.

Soon ‘round the world, the children would play,
And grownups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.

They all enjoyed freedom each month of the day,
Because of soldiers like this one lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone
On a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.

Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.

The solder awakened and I heard a rough voice,
“Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice;

I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more,
My life is my God, my country, my Corps.”

With that he rolled over and drifted off into sleep,
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still,
I noticed he shivered from the cold night’s chill.

So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
And I covered this Soldier from his toes to his head.

And I put on his T-shirt of gray and black,
With an eagle and an Army patch embroidered on back.

And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,
And for a shining moment, I was United States Army deep inside.

I didn’t want to leave him on that cold dark night,
This guardian of honor so willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over, whispered with a voice so clean and pure,
“Carry on Santa, it’s Christmas day, all is secure.”

One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night!

Do you wear glasses? I do. I also have contacts but usually wear my glasses. I like to have more than one pair so that I can wear different glasses when I feel like it. I have bought glasses in a few different brick and mortar stores but I find them pretty expensive. I don’t want to have to spend that much every year. That is why I was glad to hear about GlassesUSA.com. They are affordable and have a great selection to choose from.

When it comes to picking out new eyeglasses, I look at the price, the look and the feel. I don’t want something too expensive but I want my glasses to be cute and attractive. I usually buy glasses that are green, purple or blue in color. At GlassessUSA.com you can find a great pair for a great price. They have a lot of different looks for whatever your style might be. They also have a virtual mirror where you can upload a picture of yourself and virtually try on the glasses. How convenient is that?

Guest Post: 5 Ways to Get Rid of Your Junk before Moving House

December 21, 2011 by Julie 6 Comments

How many of you want to get more organized in the New Year?  I do!  I always do but this year I really want to get my home more organized.  I feel like our bedroom, the office and the garage need a lot of work.  I am hoping to really start to go through stuff after Christmas is over.  Andrew from Australia has written a guest post on going through your stuff.  I hope these tips will be helpful or motivate you to organize 🙂

5 Ways to Get Rid of Your Junk before Moving House

When moving house, you come across a lot of old things you no longer have use for. Old clothes, newspapers, toys, furniture and any other stuff that you find lying in your attic or basement has to be disposed off before you make your move. The first part is going through all such things and checking if you are going to need any of them after you have moved into your new home. The rest have to be taken care of. Here are 5 ways to get rid of your junk before moving house.

Yard / Garage Sale
A yard or garage sale is an easy and quick way to sell off some of the things you want to dispose off. A few of them are bound to be in working order. Put up a sign in front of your house. You can also advertise through banners or posters. Let your neighborhood know about your yard sale and you will have a number of visitors. This is a great way to make money by selling off your old things you no longer need.

Sell Online
Apart from the yard or garage sale, you can also sell your things online. eBay is the best website for selling used items. You can register and list the items you want to sell off. You have to quote a minimum price for your things and then people will bid accordingly. The person who offers the most money will be the buyer. This is a convenient method of selling if you don’t want the hassle of organizing a yard sale.

Donate
For you it may be junk, but a charity might be able to make good use of the things you want to throw away. A good example of this is old toys. You can donate them to a kids’ day care center. The best part is that you can write off the value of the donation you made from your taxes. Ultimately, you end up saving money on your taxes and providing someone something they need for free.

Give To Family or Friends
If you know someone in your social circle that could use any of the things you are disposing off, give them away. Donation is an option but you can also help out your family and friends. You have the option of choosing between the two. As long as you can find someone who could use your things, there are no issues.

Recycle
Give old newspapers, cartons and bottles for recycling. Also, your old clothes can be recycled. There are a number of recycling firms that take in all your old things and find some use for them. It is better to have the things recycled rather than burned or shredded. This is an environmentally friendly option and you can make a small contribution towards preserving the Earth.
These are 5 ways in which you can get rid of your junk before moving house. Make sure you follow them so that you have a smaller volume of belongings to transport to your new home.

Cookies with Royal Icing

Cookies with Royal Icing- How to Make cookies perfect for Christmas

So a few weeks ago I heard about making cookies with Royal icing.  I am sure I had eaten it before but now I knew what it was and how to make it.  Since my son was having a Christmas party I thought I would make some Christmas cookies he could take to the party.  I have made Christmas cookies many times but I have never made Royal icing.   I read a couple of blogs that helped me figure it out.  The Sweet Adventures of Sugar Belle had an awesome Sugar cookie recipe.   She also had some great tips about working with Royal icing.  Bake at 360 had a lot of great tips too.  I saw these Christmas tree cookies and used them as a guide to make my own. I decided to use the Wilton’s Royal icing recipe to see if I would like it or not.  It seems like it has received mixed reviews.  I did add a little vanilla to it though.

The icing itself was not hard to make.  I divided it up into four different colors.  Green, darker green, red and brown.  I used this idea (this is a video) from Karen’s Cookies to make it a little easier for myself.

With Royal icing you use different consistencies for different things that you want to do.  I made some with piping consistency and some with flood consistency for each color.  I think the green turned out the best.  I think I messed up on the red and brown.  The red was hard to make the color I wanted it to be too.  I still have a lot to learn about making this stuff.

I put the flood icing in these bottles.  Picked them up for cheap at Walmart.

I was excited to figure out how to make the dots.

Who wants a cookie?

I am really excited I decided to attempt to make these.  I admit I was a little overwhelmed but it was fun.  I plan to make another batch for Christmas and then something fun for New Year’s Eve.  I think the next time I make them I will only stick to one cookie cutter.  I also tried to make Santas, reindeer and a few other things.  I just think it might be easier to make all of one type.  I also think I will stick to a max of three colors.  I want to play around with some other Royal icing recipes and see what I like best.  The Wilton one was okay but I want to see if I can find something I like better.

What are you baking this week?

German Christmas Markets

December 16, 2011 by Julie 3 Comments

If you are ever stationed in Germany you will get the chance to visit at least one German Christmas market.  Most of the towns have them even if they are small.  While we were over in Germany we got to visit quite a few of them.  We never were able to make it to the big one in Nuremberg.

Have you ever been to a German Christmas Market?

WLC Graduation at Ft. Campbell

December 15, 2011 by Julie 4 Comments

Today my husband graduated from WLC!  WLC stands for Warrior Leader Course.  I am so proud of him!  He has been waiting to go to WLC forever it seems.  For one reason or another it hasn’t worked out until now.  Baby J and I were able to attend the graduation ceremony today.  I sadly didn’t see Ben during the actual ceremony.  I just knew he was in the back row and he knew that we were there. It gave me chills when all the men and women started singing the Army Song.  What a great feeling that was!  To know Ben was apart of something like this.  That he was entering into a different role in the Army.  That he will be moving on to new responsibilities both when he is at home and when he has to go to war again.

After the ceremony they gave us 10 minutes to spend with the soldiers but it took me about that long to find him.  When I did I gave him a hug and a kiss and told him congratulations.  I am glad that the training is over.  It will be great having him around for dinner again.
