A Year of Biblical Womanhood

October 22, 2012 by Julie 2 Comments

BibleI don’t talk too much about my faith on this blog.  Maybe a post here or there.  Maybe a mention about church every once in a while.  The main reason for that is although I am a Christian, this isn’t a Christian blog.  I don’t assume everyone who reads it has the same faith that I do.  I am like that in person too.  I have my faith but I don’t assume everyone else believes like I do.

Another reason for that is that I don’t consider myself a “Conservative Christian.”  Don’t get me wrong, I have a VERY strong belief in Jesus, God and the Bible.  I was raised in a Christian home and have gone to church pretty much my entire life.  The only two times in my life I didn’t go to church regularly was when I was a senior year of high school and a lot of the time in Germany because of being without a husband and not fully connecting with the chapel services.  Although in Germany I was pretty active in PWOC.

I was raised in a Presbyterian church.  Ben and I are members of a Presbyterian church in California.  We now attend a United Methodist church.  These two churches are where I feel most at home at.  I feel torn on the predestination issue which is one of the biggest differences between Presbyterians and Methodists.  It also has to do with location a bit.  Where we lived in CA the Methodist churches are pretty liberal.  Too liberal for us.  In Tennessee it isn’t that way and we also couldn’t find too many Presbyterian churches here.

I feel like for the last few years I have been searching.  Not searching for Jesus, I have already found him.  But searching for what it really means to be a Christian.  Searching to know what I need to believe about X. Y and Z.  I have seen a lot of crap happen in Christian churches.  Stuff that makes me sad and feel icky inside.  Stuff that had my own personal faith not been so strong, I probably would have walked away.

A few months ago I came across Rachel Held Evans blog and was amazed!  I can relate to so much of what she says.  I read her first book, Evolving in Monkey Town: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask the Questions
and found it SO interesting.  So when I saw on her blog they were asking for bloggers to review her newest book and be apart of a Facebook group, I applied.  I wasn’t sure if I would get in or not.  I wasn’t sure how many other people would apply or what type of people they were looking for.  But I got in!  I was so excited!  I AM so excited to be apart of her book launch.

You can purchase A Year of Biblical Womanhood: How a Liberated Woman Found Herself Sitting on Her Roof, Covering Her Head, and Calling Her Husband “Master” on Amazon in Paperback or Kindle form.

What is “biblical womanhood” . . . really?

Strong-willed and independent, Rachel Held Evans couldn’t sew a button on a blouse before she embarked on a radical life experiment—a year of biblical womanhood. Intrigued by the traditionalist resurgence that led many of her friends to abandon their careers to assume traditional gender roles in the home, Evans decides to try it for herself, vowing to take all of the Bible’s instructions for women as literally as possible for a year.

Pursuing a different virtue each month, Evans learns the hard way that her quest for biblical womanhood requires more than a “gentle and quiet spirit” (1 Peter 3:4). It means growing out her hair, making her own clothes, covering her head, obeying her husband, rising before dawn, abstaining from gossip, remaining silent in church, and even camping out in the front yard during her period.

See what happens when a thoroughly modern woman starts referring to her husband as “master” and “praises him at the city gate” with a homemade sign. Learn the insights she receives from an ongoing correspondence with an Orthodox Jewish woman, and find out what she discovers from her exchanges with a polygamist wife.  Join her as she wrestles with difficult passages of scripture that portray misogyny and violence against women.

With just the right mixture of humor and insight, compassion and incredulity, A Year of Biblical Womanhood is an exercise in scriptural exploration and spiritual contemplation. What does God truly expect of women, and is there really a prescription for biblical womanhood? Come along with Evans as she looks for answers in the rich heritage of biblical heroines, models of grace, and all-around women of valor.

Here is a video about the book…

I am on chapter two and it is pretty interesting so far 🙂

I will be blogging about it here and there over the next few weeks 🙂

Now You Tell Me! 12 Army Wives Give the Best Advice They Never Got: Making a Living, Making a Life Book Review

October 19, 2012 by Julie 6 Comments

I was able to review the book, Now You Tell Me! 12 Army Wives Give the Best Advice They Never Got: Making a Living, Making a Life by Sheridan Scott (Author), B.K. Sherer (Author) and Donna Lyons.

It features all different kinds of Army wives, including the wife of Retired 4 Star General Peter Chiorelli as well as the wives of wounded veterans and isolated moms.  It will be published on November 1, 2012.

This book is a great collection of stories from real Army Wives.  From their experiences marrying a soldier to deployments to helping children through the Military life.  There is a lot of great advice in this book from those who have been through all sorts of challenges with the Army.  Each of the wives have a different background and different experience as an Army wife.  I liked hearing the different perspectives.  Some of the info they gave I could relate to and others I haven’t experienced myself but I know of others who have.

The book is broken down so each wife gets her own chapter.  This makes it easy to read and I like that the first part of each chapter included a picture of the person telling the story.

Living as an Army wife can be a challenging experience for a lot of people.  It helps to know we aren’t alone and hearing others and their stories helps make the journey a little easier.

There are also some charts in the back which can help you understand rank, size of the different units, abbreviations and even military time.  This book would be an excellent gift for a new Army wife and even encouraging for a wife whose husband has been in a few years.

You can purchase the book on Amazon 🙂

* I was provided a free copy of the book to review.

happyFamily

I had the opportunity to review some yummy snacks for toddlers by Happy Family Organic Superfoods.  With a toddler in the house I am always looking for new and fun foods for him.  I am lucky in that he will eat a lot of things his brothers were too picky to eat at his age.

We tried the Happy Yogis Yogurt snacks for babies and toddlers, Happy Munchies canisters and Crocs, Happy Tot pouches, Happy Tot Plus pouches, Happy Tot toddler meal bowls and Happy Times snack packs.  I have to say that Baby J’s favorites are probably the Happy Munchies and the Happy Tot Plus pouches.  He just gobbles them up!  I love the pouches because they are easy to take with us places or pack in a lunch for him.  The yogurt snacks and munchies are perfect for a little snack in the morning and afternoon.

You can find Happy Family products at the Commissary  Publix and Target…at least around here in Clarksville.

Kyle Sherman Album ‘Hear Me’ Review and Giveaway

October 10, 2012 by Julie 4 Comments

I wanted to share a review of the album “Hear Me” by Kyle Sherman.  Kyle was a full-time worship leader at Lifechurch.TV at their campus in Fort Worth, TX.  He just released his first album on October 9th!  “Hear Me” is an eclectic and authentic mix of rootsy, southern soul.

I found his album to be a great addition to my worship cd collection.  His music is catchy and full of soul.  It is an album I would like to listen to while in my car or on my ipod. I thought his music was relaxing and uplifting.

Album Bio

Fort Worth-based singer-songwriter Kyle Sherman recently signed on as the flagship artist to brand new label RayLynn Records, an opportunity that presented itself during a time period when a record deal wasn’t even on his radar.

“It’s crazy how God works,” Kyle says. ‘Five years ago, I pushed pretty hard to do my own thing as a singer-songwriter, but every well I approached would dry up. It clearly wasn’t the right time.” So Kyle continued on a path of leading worship, taking a full-time role as worship leader at Lifechurch.TV’s Fort Worth campus under the leadership of renowned pastor/author Craig Groeschel.

Just 3-years later Kyle made it back to Nashville, pouring his heart into a microphone at Sony studio with veteran producer and country singer-songwriter Mark Collie making his first album. God is faithful. Hear Me, the result of those sessions, is an eclectic and authentic mix of rootsy, southern soul.

Steel Magnolias on Lifetime Tv

September 17, 2012 by Julie 3 Comments

Steel Magnolias

Did you know that Lifetime Television is about to release a new version of Steel Magnolias? I was super excited to hear this as I am a fan of the original with Julia Roberts. I was given the opportunity to watch the movie and Ben and I did so last weekend. After we watched the new version we decided to watch the older version because it had been a while since I had seen it. Here is some information on the new one which will air Sunday October 7th, at 9pm/8pm Central on Lifetime.

ALL-STAR CAST FEATURES QUEEN LATIFAH,
PHYLICIA RASHAD, ADEPERO ODUYE, CONDOLA RASHAD
WITH JILL SCOTT AND ALFRE WOODARD
Film Executive Produced By Award Winning Duo CRAIG ZADAN and NEIL MERON
QUEEN LATIFAH, SHAKIM COMPERE and SHELBY STONE Also Executive Produce
Film Directed By KENNY LEON

Steel Magnolias chronicles the lives and friendship of six women in Louisiana.  Supporting each other through their triumphs ad tragedies, they congregate at Truvy’s beauty shop to ponder the mysteries of life and death, husbands and children – and hair and nails – all the important topics that truly unite and celebrate women.

Queen Latfiah will play “M’Lynn,” Phylicia Rashad as “Clairee,” Adepero Oduye as “Annelle,” Condola Rashad as “Shelby, ” Jill Scott as “Truvy” and Alfre Woodard as “Ouiser.”

My Thoughts: I thought it was great! It truly was an updated version of the original. Most of the dialog is the same and the new actors did a great job of becoming the original characters. They did update things for the times. The original was in the 1980s so instead of talking about a VCR they would mention a PlayStation. Although they all did a wonderful job I especially loved Queen Latifah’s role as M’Lynn. She brought all the right emotion to her role.

What I love about Steel Magnolias is that it will make you laugh and it will make you cry. This movie didn’t disappoint.

So go now and set your DVRs if you have one. You don’t want to miss this!

My 10 Year Anniversary Post and Giveaway

August 6, 2012 by Julie 43 Comments

Young Couple

When we first met~2001

10 years! Sometimes it seems so hard to believe. 10 years has gone by so quickly. We have done a lot in those 10 years. We have lived in 7 homes. We have lived in California, Kentucky, Germany and now Tennessee. We have three boys and no pets…yet. Hoping we can change that in the next year. We have been through three deployments and a few other separations. We have been through good periods and bad. I feel so lucky to have an amazing man by my side and looking forward to the next 50 years with him 🙂

San Francisco

Our 10th Anniversary

We celebrated our anniversary twice this year. We got to spend a day and night away from the kids and went to San Fransisco. We had a great time walking around Pier 39 and down to the Embarcadero. It was just nice to spend that time together. To not have to worry about the kids or any of that. Just us, on a date. It was fantastic!

Then on Friday night our actual anniversary a good friend of mine stayed with he boys so we could go out. We went to dinner, yay Outback and then went to go see the Dark Night Rises. We loved it! It was such a great movie. It was just a great night.

When we first got married I thought our 10 year anniversary would be spent on a cruise or a trip to Europe or something big like that. In the end it didn’t work out that way and I am fine with it. With Military life and just life in general we never really know what we can do for our anniversary. I am still hoping for an anniversary cruise in the future but it will have to wait for a few years.

I wanted to thank everyone who shared their blog posts with me. If you missed them on Facebook and Twitter you can visit them here…

Follow Leading Lady on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

I have always struggled with finding good yet pretty bras for my size. Usually if I am in a store and see some cute bras they either don’t have my size or are not comfortable at all. It is almost like the bra manufactures don’t like larger sizes for some reason. This is why I was excited to do a bra review for Leading Lady. I was able to chose two bras to try. I decided on the Molded Padded Seamless Underwire Full Figure Bra in “Deep Claret” and the Lace Cup Underwire Full Figure Bra.

Leading Lady Bra

Leading Lady BraI decided to go with my normal size, 40D and received my bras in just a few days.  After wearing both bras a few times I have to say I am in LOVE with these bras.  I love that I now have a pretty lace bra that fits and is comfortable for me.  I also love the bright color of the Molded one and would love to order a few more in other colors.  Not everone is a fan of underwire and Leading Lady also has the wire-free options which is nice.  If you don’t know your size there is a great calculator on the site.

Leading Lady Military Friends and Family

The Leading Lady Military Friends & Family discount code is MBLOG20 and offers 20% off site-wide July 1-7. (The code cannot be combined with any other offer.)

If you are bigger on top like I am or are in need of nursing bras, I would really suggest checking out Leading Lady 🙂  I know I will be ordering from them again in the future.

 * Leading Lady provided me with two bras for review and all options about product are my own!

Dr. Bizer’s Vision World Value Vision Visit and Review

May 9, 2012 by Julie 5 Comments

Dr. Bizer
I wear glasses. I use to wear contacts but the last couple years glasses just seemed to work better for me. I was pretty excited to get an email from Dr. Bizer’s Vision World about going in for an eye exam and receiving a pair of glasses for a review. It was actually time for me to go in for an eye exam but I was being a little lazy about making the appointment.

Dr. Bizer

I visited Doctor’s Value Vision in our local mall here in Clarksville. When I walked in I was welcomed and asked to sign in. I didn’t have to wait too long before they took me to a side room to blow the air in my eyes to check for Glaucoma. Pretty much what I have been used to in an eye exam. I then waited a few more minutes before I went into the room with the Eye Doctor. She was very nice and had me do all the standard testing that they do. Asking me what is more clear, A or B and all of that type of stuff. It seemed to go pretty quickly. After all the testing was done she was very good about explaining how my eyes were doing and what she suggested I should do about getting contacts. She dilated my eyes, gave me a prescription and then I was introduced to the lady that would help me pick out my glasses.

Dr. Bizer

When it comes to picking glasses I can be pretty indecisive about it. I usually want a fun pair but something different from what I had before. The lady showed me a bunch of different glasses after I told her what I was looking for. After trying on a lot of pairs I finally found my perfect pair of glasses. The lady that was helping me also made sure that I ordered the right kind of glasses. My new ones will help when I am on the computer and when I drive at night. I explained to her that it was a little scary driving at night because the lights had a glow to them. I shouldn’t have that problem with these new glasses. I was also impressed by their selection. There were a lot of glasses to chose from which is nice for me because I am picky.

Dr. Bizer

It took two weeks but I was able to pick up my glasses today! I am very happy with them. I also felt like if I have an issue with them, I can go back and they will help me out. I am still debating on contacts. I am sure I will eventually get them again but for now I am happy with my glasses. I was really impressed with the staff and my experience at Dr. Bizer’s. I enjoyed my experience very much and found them to be very helpful.

You can visit them on Facebook-https://www.facebook.com/DrBizersVisionWorld

Twitter -https://twitter.com/#!/DrMarkLynn

and find an office in your area here… http://www.drbizersvisionworld.com

And for my Military readers, they do accept Tricare 🙂

I was provided an eye exam and glasses in exchange for this post. This review and opinions mentioned in it are all my own.
