Another Beautiful Day at Knott’s Berry Farm

September 28, 2012 by Julie 2 Comments

Growing up in Southern California I have such fond memories of going to Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland as a child.  That is why I love taking my boys.  Now growing up we usually went to Disneyland during the year and not at all during the summer.  We would have yearly passes and most of the summer was blocked for us anyways.  So as an adult I refuse to pay all that money to go to Disneyland in July.  So this summer, since we were in CA in July we decided to go to Knott’s Berry Farm.  It is a cheaper option and not as many people.  They also had a Military discount too.  I also wanted to mention that I just went to their site and read this…

Knott’s annual tribute to our Military, past and present, starts November 1st. FREE admission for Veterans or current serving military personnel and one guest with proper I.D. presented at turnstile. (DD214, Veterans Administration Hospital ID or Active Military Service ID.) Plus purchase up to six additional tickets for just $19 each! Ends November 21.

We were able to meet up with one of my best friends and two of her kids.  We spent the morning with them and then had lunch and stayed until about 7 that night.  The boys had such a great time, even little Joshua.  He was pretty done by the end of the day though.

Fall in Seattle

September 24, 2012 by Julie 2 Comments

I am very happy to have a guest poster for this morning.  She is going to be talking about fall which is my favorite season 🙂

A Girl is a 20 something blogger who began blogging in 2008 as a means of coping with a deployment.  She is a Veterinary Technician by trade and loves her work in Emergency and Critical Care.  She is married to a USMC reservist with 10 years of service, whom she met shortly after he returned from a deployment.  They have been married for four years, have three, very bratty dogs, and are currently trying to muddle through the aftermath of a difficult deployment for both.  You can find her blog at A Boy, A Girl , and The Marine Corps!

 Seattle

There is something about fall in Seattle.  Our summer is only a month long at best, our winter is two if we are lucky, and most of the rest of the year is spent in a perpetual springtime.  So, for a few months a year, I have this amazing time called “Fall in Seattle”, which is unlike fall any other place.  It is a time of grey skies, and clouds that are not ominous, but welcoming.  They stretch across the horizon, obscuring the sun and moon, but wrapping our lives in a protective layer that prevents the temperature from ever being too hot or too cold, but a gentle chill that invigorates the senses.

This September was unseasonably warm.  There is no reason in the world it should ever be over 80 degrees in Seattle more than one day a year, let alone for the entire first 17 days of what I have come to regard as the month that I look forward to most.  It is September that marks a truly hit or miss daily weather forecast.  It may be sunny and warm, it may be sunny and raining, or it might ice over.  And the weatherman doesn’t know any better than you do what it might be, and the Weather Gods don’t care if it does all of those things in course of just 24 hours.

And then fall comes… all at once.  You wake up one morning and all the leaves are brown, then the next day they are gone.  And that is fall in Seattle, if you are lucky enough to see it happen at all.  So I don’t think of fall as the time of year to enjoy the changing of the leaves and the rustle of them in the wind, most of our trees are green all year round anyway.

But what I do think of is fog.  I think of rains washing through the city, cleansing us of our summer sins, nourishing the landscapes as the flowers are replaced with soft earth and grass that never dies, but simply stops growing.  I think of mornings spent drinking warm tea, and the ridiculous clothing you will see only in Seattle, where moist weather gear is as much a fashion statement as it is a functional part of your wardrobe.

Though it is never truly very dry here, the air becomes so moist, that outsiders mistake it for rain.  A fine mist looms in the air and you can become damp simply by walking to your car, even without a raindrop in sight.  Dew forms on the tips of pine trees, creating the glassy look of a flash rainstorm.  The sidewalks never quite dry, the ground never stops sloshing under your feet and the smell of the air is always clean.

You don’t see many umbrellas, which is how you can tell the tourists, the transplants and other non-natives from the locals, or those who have lived here long enough to know better.  You won’t see rain boots, unless they are covered with bright, multi-colored polka dots (as mine are), or rubber duckies or other such non-sense.  And to be honest, I didn’t even own a pair of rain boots until I needed them for school because we were going to a dairy farm. I have not worn them in at least 2 years, the last time being when I used to have to walk through the mud to catch the horse I rode for my riding lesson.  Because even though we all own them (or most of us do), we really don’t see the reason to change shoes just because it’s wet.

If you ask people about Fall most will cite amazing quotes about the leaves turning color on the East Coast, where the trees are not green all year round.  You will hear talk of crisp breezes and the feeling that winter is almost here…  But for me, winter is not the time of year I look forward to the most.  I grew up in Seattle.  It means that I have never really experienced much in the way of a gentle change in weather as the leaves turn color and fall to the ground in preparation for winter.  Instead, I’ve been lucky enough to experiences lush hills that line our freeways as I laugh that even born and raised here, most still can’t drive when the streets are wet, and I can look out my windows and not be sure if it’s morning or evening because my world has been tinted by grey colored glasses for days.  And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Steel Magnolias on Lifetime Tv

September 17, 2012 by Julie 3 Comments

Steel Magnolias

Did you know that Lifetime Television is about to release a new version of Steel Magnolias? I was super excited to hear this as I am a fan of the original with Julia Roberts. I was given the opportunity to watch the movie and Ben and I did so last weekend. After we watched the new version we decided to watch the older version because it had been a while since I had seen it. Here is some information on the new one which will air Sunday October 7th, at 9pm/8pm Central on Lifetime.

ALL-STAR CAST FEATURES QUEEN LATIFAH,
PHYLICIA RASHAD, ADEPERO ODUYE, CONDOLA RASHAD
WITH JILL SCOTT AND ALFRE WOODARD
Film Executive Produced By Award Winning Duo CRAIG ZADAN and NEIL MERON
QUEEN LATIFAH, SHAKIM COMPERE and SHELBY STONE Also Executive Produce
Film Directed By KENNY LEON

Steel Magnolias chronicles the lives and friendship of six women in Louisiana.  Supporting each other through their triumphs ad tragedies, they congregate at Truvy’s beauty shop to ponder the mysteries of life and death, husbands and children – and hair and nails – all the important topics that truly unite and celebrate women.

Queen Latfiah will play “M’Lynn,” Phylicia Rashad as “Clairee,” Adepero Oduye as “Annelle,” Condola Rashad as “Shelby, ” Jill Scott as “Truvy” and Alfre Woodard as “Ouiser.”

My Thoughts: I thought it was great! It truly was an updated version of the original. Most of the dialog is the same and the new actors did a great job of becoming the original characters. They did update things for the times. The original was in the 1980s so instead of talking about a VCR they would mention a PlayStation. Although they all did a wonderful job I especially loved Queen Latifah’s role as M’Lynn. She brought all the right emotion to her role.

What I love about Steel Magnolias is that it will make you laugh and it will make you cry. This movie didn’t disappoint.

So go now and set your DVRs if you have one. You don’t want to miss this!

French Dip Sandwiches in my Crockpot

September 10, 2012 by Julie 2 Comments

The last week or two I have really gotten into crockpot meals. A lot easier than making a big meal each night. I also like that I can’t talk myself out of cooking when most of the meal is already almost done in the crockpot. I am also back to meal planning. The night before my shopping day I plan to sit down and find yummy recipes I want to make in the next week. Most of these will come from Pinterest or just by Googling what I want to make.  I know that meal planning makes life so much easier and I have been out of the routine of it for too long.

I love to eat out but we really can’t afford to do it more than once a week.  Meal planning will help with that too.

I Googled, “Easy Crockpot recipes” to find some simple ones. I need simple, at least right now. I have found a lot of yummy ones but they usually have too many ingredients for me. I am looking for recipes with 3-5 ingredients max.

On Saturday I made yummy french dip sandwiches. I added some french fries and it became a yummy meal for us.

Here is the recipe from About.com by Linda Larsen.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 hours

Total Time: 10 hours, 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 lb. fresh beef brisket
  • 1 pkg. dry onion soup mix
  • 10-oz. can condensed beef broth

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in 3-4 quart slow cooker. Cover crockpot and cook on low for 8-10 hours until beef is tender. Skim any fat from liquid in crockpot. Remove beef and cut across grain into thin slices. Serve on crusty baguette rolls and serve with the hot broth for dipping. 8 sandwiches.

See? Super easy and super yummy!

Celebrating our anniversary in San Francisco, California

August 31, 2012 by Julie 5 Comments

When we were in California my Mother-in-law watched the boys for us for a night. We decided to spend the day in San Francisco and then a night in a hotel. We ended up spending about five hours in the city and then found our hotel in Alameda which was nice. It was across the street from a shopping center with restuants so it worked out perfectly for us and was much cheaper than staying in the city.

San Francisco

First we stopped to take pictures at the Golden Gate Bridge.  For some reason I have never done this before.  It was a treat!

San Francisco

San Francisco

We walked by Fisherman’s Wharf and spent some time at Pier 39!

San Francisco

San Francisco

Lots of people at Pier 39 🙂

San Francisco

Then we walked around the city a little bit.

San Francisco

We had a lot of fun just the two of us.  It was nice to have that little time together and celebrate our 10th anniversary a little early 🙂

Asperger’s and Kindergarten

August 29, 2012 by Julie 6 Comments

Asperger’s and Kindergarten

I really feel like I need a vacation every single weekend. This is the third week of school I think and my son is having a hard time. This is normal and expected and I know this, but it doesn’t make it any easier for me.

Every morning once I get him on the bus, I burst into tears. It is always SO difficult. Then I hear how he is doing during the day through text or phone calls. The last couple of days haven’t been going as well. It is like he is realizing that this school this IS happening and not going away and he is going to fight against it as much as he can.

I am very very thankful that 1) We have an amazing ABA team working with him. 2) The school is really working with him. Excellent teacher and staff. I really think God made sure we bought a house for this school for a reason. THAT part of it is all working out.

I know how normal it is for an Asperger’s child to have trouble with changes in his life and this is a big change. Although he went to preschool last year, this Kindergarten thing is different and he has to go every single day. He was never a really clingy baby or toddler but lately he says he just wants to be with me. I went out for a walk last night and he flipped out. I think he is missing our time together. I can understand that and it is something a lot of new kindergarteners go through.

I struggle with thinking, “If Only…” about my life. I caught myself thinking, “If only he didn’t have Asperger’s. If only this wasn’t such a challenge for him.” and then I think about who he is and all the things he is and I get mad at myself for thinking that way. Yes Asperger’s is a hard and challenging thing to deal with but it is apart of who my son is. It will never go away and it just means he needs extra help with things like school. He doesn’t see the world like I do and that is hard. But he is a great little boy who loves Star Wars and Legos and playing with his brothers.

We were talking about what he wanted to be when he grew up last night. He told me he doesn’t want to be a soldier because the Army scares him. I told him he didn’t have to be a soldier just because his Daddy was. He could be anything he wanted to be. He decided he is going to grow up and invent new Legos. He already has a couple of great ideas. I told him that sounded like the perfect job for him.

asperger's

Even though deep down I know he is going to be okay and that he just needs more time to get use to school, my heart has a hard time with it. I feel sad that it is so hard for him. That he can’t just enjoy school like his brother does. That little things bother him. Things I might not even think could. And if I am honest I think I really just want everything to go smoothly. I want every day to be a good day for him. I don’t want to know he is at school during the day having a hard time. I cry a lot about this because I am his mom and really isn’t that what moms do? No matter what situation your kid is going through, if you are a mom and you know your child is having a hard time, you get upset about it.

My son will always have Asperger’s. Certain parts of life will always be hard for him. However, he won’t always have trouble getting on the bus. He won’t always have such a hard time at school. He will learn and figure things out. And I can be there for him. I can support him and make sure he is getting the best care that we can give him. Make sure he is getting the best tools he can be given to succeed.

I really have felt like a basket case lately and I am thankful that I have friends that support me and let me cry to them. This is a struggle but we can get through it. I know that we can.

Season of Deployment

August 17, 2012 by Julie 4 Comments

Soldier DayI am on my MOPS steering team this year as a table leader. This is my first year as a volunteer for MOPS and I am really looking forward to it. If you are in the Ft. Campbell area and are pregnant or have any kids 5 and under, you should come to MOPS on post 🙂 We meet every other Wednesday at the new chapel.

We are preparing for a lot more moms this year because sadly, this is going to be a big deployment year for our post. Not everyone will leave at once and most likely the last group will leave around the time the first groups get home but it is still something that is felt post wide.

I have friends who are getting ready to say goodbye to their husbands, they are working on getting all those last-minute details prepared. My husband has a possible month range but who really knows if and when he will go. Bags are being packed, wills are being taken care of an Army wives around here are making their deployment to-do lists. For some this will be there very first deployment, for others this will be # 3 or 4 or even more. It will be #4 for us when my husband leaves.

It is hard is to know that another deployment is coming and see these kind of things in the news:

7 US troops among 11 killed in helicopter crash in Afghanistan

Monthly Army suicides reach all-time high in July with 38 suspected

How can we stay calm for yet another deployment? So many of our soldiers have been through so much. Breaks don’t feel long enough.

My fellow blogger Household Diva 6 wrote an amazing post yesterday about it called War is a horrible thing! I really recommend that you read it.

This Army life…it is just really hard sometimes. It is hard to watch husbands go off to war, even if they are not your own. It is hard knowing it will be your turn soon. It is hard not knowing when he might be deployed. It is hard waiting for him to return. It is hard knowing he could be hurt or worse. It is just hard. So unbelievably hard.

If you are reading this and about to start a deployment, just know you are not alone. A lot of us have been through it and know what it is like. Do not be afraid to ask for help (which I really really struggle with) and know that people are praying for you and that deployments don’t last forever.

If you are reading this and do not have a family member in the Military, please remember to pray for our troops and their families. We need it. We really really need it.
